Democratic Party Takes Debate to YouTube

The Democratic Party reached out to the digital generation during its scheduled South Carolina debate between presidential candidates by broadcasting video questions submitted by users of the YouTube website. Instead of a panel of journalists or political experts, the evening featured regular people and real voters with their own set of questions. CNN sponsored the debate and sifted through over 3,000 videos before selecting about 50 for the event. Those videos were aired during a two hour question and answer format with the eight Democratic candidates.

The result was a totally unique interface between the electorate and the candidates. Rather than canned questions that allowed a candidate to hit sound bites and campaign themes, the videos ranged from thought provoking to offbeat. The common goal though was to keep the candidates’ responses more genuine and spontaneous.

Some of the candidates opened up to the new format, and answered with personality and candidness equal to that of the questioner. Unfortunately though there was little debate between candidates to clarify differences on issues, and they frequently segued to their tried and true talking points.

The videos covered a range of topics, from domestic issues to foreign policy. They included questions on gun control, gay marriage, health, the war in Iraq and race.

The videos brought a unique slant to the event by adding faces to the questions. The unscripted format allowed for some unusual subjects to be broached, like whether the candidates would serve as president for minimum wage or whether they sent their children to public or private schools. The videos also facilitated a creative presentation, such as a snowman asking about climate change.

The candidates capitalized on the YouTube platform by presenting their own videos. Some stuck with campaign issues while others sought to diffuse past stories about their campaigns with humor. Bill Richardson won high marks for his folksy video and he exhibited a comfort with the youthful YouTube venue. Being continually dogged by stories of $400 haircuts, John Edwards mixed serious video with the theme song from the musical ‘Hair’ in his video, closing by asking what really matters.

The impact of the new debate format is still being discussed, though it certainly warrants an innovative label. Some view digital media as a grassroots alternative to mainstream media, and more importantly, the future of the electorate process. Candidates now court the internet world with social networking tools like MySpace accounts, websites and blogs. Voters almost universally want a chance to ask candidates questions for a better understanding of the issues. The CNN/YouTube debate offered a new meeting ground for an exchange of ideas. A similar event is planned with the Republican candidates in September.

Naming your blog is easy, but can be difficult if your wanting it to be found. Why is this? Well one common problem bloggers have while they are writing their blog is that they assume the potenial visitor has already found their blog article, so they wright all about the blog, but they don't explain the blog using keywords that the potenital visitor would type in to find the blog in the search engines.

If you are having problems trying to determine which keywords you should use, you can use several free tools like Googles Suggest and Overtures Keyword Inventory or use a commercial program like Trellian's Keyword Discovery (www.keyworddiscovery.com) which is priced resonable. These tools can help you pick keywords for your blogs that are gems instead of playing the guessing game.

Blogs are a strong tool for social media and companys trying to promote new products, special offerings, success stories and more if they are updated frequently and named correctly. This is why it is so important on learning How to Name Your Blog.

If you're wanting people to find your blog and you're blogging about a specific topic - say, tattoos - then make sure you put the word "tattoo" in the name of your blog. This may seem obvious but sometimes we forgot.

If you used a name like "Betty Sue's Art for the Skin," you have a blog name that is interesting but people wouldn't find you if they were searching for blogs on tattoos. So give your blog name some thought, especially if you're wanting your blog to bring you more business opportunities. Think like someone searching for what you're offering, not someone who's already found you.

So check out Elliott's article - you might get some ideas.

Paris Hilton is featured in a full page public service announcement in Seventeen Magazine telling readers, “All it takes is one drink to mess with the way you drive - it clouds your judgment and slows your reflexes. Don't take any chances. It just isn't worth it.”

Those certainly are important words of advice though one can’t help but think they would carry more weight if Hilton actually embraced them. She was stopped in Los Angeles for speeding and driving erratically in the early hours of the morning. In the ensuing days she made numerous attempts to trivialize the event.

Claiming she had had only one margarita at a charity event party, Hilton said later that, “I hadn't eaten all day. I was really hungry. I was driving fast because I needed a burger.”

Clouded judgement indeed.

In an interview with Seventeen Magazine the star of the television show ‘Simple Life’ went on to say that she has not reached her sexual peak. Hilton was quoted as saying, “I think you like sex when you're in your thirties. That's what someone told me. We'll see.” That will provide great insight for the teenage readers.

And since Hilton is 25 years old that means we’ll have plenty of future events and quotes to write about.

digg_url =

So you have a podcast and you want to know how promote your Podcast. I've got some simple tips in this blog entry. This isn't complete. I'm capturing a few notes I have in mind and soon I'll pull together in a more complete summary later.

If you have a Podcast then you'll have a URL for your RSS2.0 feed. For
example I have a Podcast program that I produce at
http://www.talkingportraits.com and my RSS2.0 URL for that feed is
http://www.talkingportraits.com/interviews/RSS2

Now that you have your RSS2.0 you should get a couple of programs going
and uploaded or linked to your website that is for your Podcast, I'm
being vague here because I know the hosting of Podcasts can vary.
Regardless of how you host your program you will have and RSS2.0 feed
so, let's start with that with the promotion tips.

Get Listed in Podcast Directories by adding your URL and waiting for
them to include your program. Be patient, some of these directories add
new programs manually. It can take a few days or longer. If you have a
webstats program of some kind, you can typically see when your site is
spidered by a Podcast Directory.

A good place to start is at www.Podcastingnews.com.
You have to register as a user first. Then you can Add your Podcast.
There is a pretty good one page set of notes on how to Promote Your Podcast that is helpful.

You'll also want to add yourself to the directory at www.Podcasting.Net and Adam Curry's http://www.ipodder.org directory.

The a many more current list of Podcast Directories type this term into Google
"Podcast Directory" or click on this link and you can see the listing from Google directly.
Our latest client is a family-owned establishment that is solely focused on private dining, catering, or any private entertainment event; for example, weddings, business meetings or any small group wanting a place to be alone in high style. This business is Sicola's Private Dining - "A Culinary Experience" in Austin, Texas.

Located at the site of the former Café Spiazzo at 5416 Parkcrest, Sicola's is the handiwork of master chef Stephen Sicola. His father, Tom, is also a partner. And Stephen produces menus for both dining in (they can seat up to about 45) and for catering that are absolutely tantalizing. Check out their menus. At the end of each month they open up their establishment for wine-tasting and a special meal. You have to sign up in advance because space is limited.

Stephen is fully embracing a business blog for Sicola's, so look for that to be online in early May. I'm excited about this because the blog will provide a way to more fully express the depth and quality of the service they provide. You just cannot fully appreciate how wonderful they are as people from a static brochure site (though their site is quite informative and beautiful).

My experience with private dining is to ask for a special room in a busy (typically noisy) restaurant. I cannot say that I've ever been really impressed with such an arrangement. However, when I walked into the Sicola's dining establishment, I quickly sensed a completely different feeling of privacy that would take such a dining experience well beyond my expectations. I have visions of inviting 5 or 6 couples for a truly unique gourmet event where I could select the food and have a say in the wine, the music, the lighting and even the flowers on the table. I guess I'm just getting older because this all sounds so much more appealing than when I was younger.

This is what is exciting about working with successful small businesses. I'll post another note when their business blog is up.

Bon appetit!

Tom

RSS is used to subscribe to blog content, or any content that will travel through an RSS feed. It's a protocol for transferring a very simple set of items (author, date, email, title, description, blog entry ...) between two machines. RSS is free and nobody owns it. Now add the ability to tag specific content for sale in RSS feeds and create a special search engine just to mine these tags from the RSS content, and you get Edgeio.

This concept has more than one of my clients excited. Here is a page from their website that explains what they do at a high level. Visit www.edgeio.com for details.

What is edgeio?

Anyone can publish content on edgeio. With an RSS-enabled website, you can publish items on your own site and then direct edgeio to index and organize your content. You can also publish items directly on edgeio using a listings blog. Either way, publishers remain in control. No more listing fees, complicated forms to fill in, and, for RSS publishers, no struggling to keep content synchronized across multiple websites. Just post it, use appropriate tags, and edgeio takes care of the rest.

A blogger can publish an item for sale and have it listed on edgeio within a matter of seconds. An auto dealer with an RSS-enabled website can publish their inventory in real time to edgeio's network. Using tags indicating location, realtors can reach buyers in specific communities around the world. Podcasters and video bloggers can use tags to describe their work, making it easily discoverable in the edgeio network of websites. Individuals without their own RSS-enabled website can publish directly onto edgeio with a listings blog that edgeio creates for you.

---

Is this an eBay killer? Maybe not. It's yet another channel for developing a relationship with clients. Since this is based on the subscription model that RSS uses, we're not going to be spammed to death by Internet Marketing vendors - well, let's hope not. I'm curious to learn more and hope to sell some of the excess audio gear I have. I'll post my results when I do that and let you know.

Tom

What does it mean? With Plone and Salesforce.com integrated:

Someone who signs up for your Plone website will be automatically dropped into your Salesforce.com database

Any data you collect (interest area, newsletter signup, etc.) on your website will be recorded in Salesforce.com

You can use all that data, and the constituent’s email address, to drive communication through any number of email marketing services that integrate with Salesforce.com

If you desire, you can allow your constituents to view and change the data you have in Salesforce.com

We are going to be working with Enfold Systems on this project – they are some of the smartest Plone minds out there. Steve works with John Stahl, and I plan to create a podcast with them in May to find out more about this development. I'll have to say I've been inching my way toward using a CRM package. I was looking at SugarCRM, but I might now consider Salesforce because all my sites are in Plone.

I'm excited too, Steve.

Tom
